Standard Windows Procedures

Here's an interesting problem that can be hard to track down. Different application programs would start and quit randomly and the logon screen would act funny - as if someone were remotely controlling it. Usually, you'll suspect a hack attack or a virus, but it also could be that this is caused by Office XP's built in speech recognition feature being turned on, but not configured. The computer will respond to sounds in the environment.

Here's how to turn off the speech recognition and text services (and, we hope, fix those weird problems):

  1. Click Start, Control Panel
  2. Click the Regional and Language Options applet
  3. Click the Languages tab
  4. Click the Details button
  5. Click the Advanced tab
  6. Under "System Configuration," check the box that says Turn off advanced text services.
  7. Click OK in each dialog box to close it.
